Mary Jane Miller is organizing an 8 week directed group for prayer and and contemplation at St Paul's Anglican Church . The focus will be on Advent first and conclude with the Christmas season. We will ask what it means to come into the world, and the spiritual life which is activated as a result. Centering prayer, contemplative prayer and the prayer of quiet are all going to be explored in an effort to open ourselves to listening to God and remembering whose we are.
Beginning December1st and January 19th at St Paul's Church
The format will be simple, 20 minutes of quiet, 20 minutes of conversation, discussion observation, etc and finalize the time with another 20 minutes of quiet. 4 weeks in Advent and 4 weeks following Christmas, 50 pesos donation per session and there is no requirement you come to them all.
Every Thursdays 4 PM
IDEAS to be EXPLORED
Advent tells us Christ is near and
Christmas tells us Christ is here.

Christmas represents God's brilliant idea to become human and walk among us! Why do such a thing? Because we need an image of love for it to grow within us, to show us the way and to have a reference point for what is true, good and lasting love.
Come and prepare a place within yourself. Epiphany is the Christian celebration of what other religions call enlightenment. Enlightenment is the inward realization and consciousness of being identified with who we really are. We are individual expressions or manifestations of God, a wave of energy, light and purpose which flows through us.
"All great spirituality teaches about letting go of what you don't need and who you are not. Then, when you can get little enough and naked enough and poor enough, you'll find that the little place where you really are is ironically more than enough and is all that you need. At that place, you will have nothing to prove to anybody and nothing to protect.
All are welcome to share tier insights and experiences. Peace

Location: Bellas Artes, Hernandez Macias 75

Poetry Café Bellas Artes will launch their second season on Thursday, January 19th by featuring three poets with strong ties to San Miguel de Allende: Lynn Learned, Ken Morrow, and Nan Williamson.

Early on in her career and shortly after the Watts riot, Lynn Learned created programs for Cross Cultural Communication through the Office of Economic Opportunity in Los Angeles. Later, she was invited to go to the Western Equatorial Pacific with John Kenneth Galbraith to assist in a series of economic meetings with important Palauan dignitaries that resulted in the Palauan’s working toward independent status with a Nuclear Free Constitution. Subsequently, she produced an award winning PBS television documentary, “Strategic Trust, The Making of Nuclear Free Palau” and was selected for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Documentary Series and won the Benton Film Peace Prize.

Trained as an artist with a Masters in Fine Art, Lynn’s vocation has centered on photography and film, but she has always written poems on the back of envelopes or scraps of paper. Poetry has been and is always with her.

Ken Morrow has worked hard as architect, sculptor, painter, furniture-maker, candle-maker, carpenter, bartender but never as hard as his current effort to define the verb “to write.” One entry in that definition is the preparation of a manuscript of recent poems with the working title, Uncertainty Principle. Another entry is his current exploration of poetry for multiple voices as spoken, dramatic narrative. For the January Poetry Café Ken will collaborate with his partnered readers, Lynn Learned and Nan Williamson, to present a group of poems written for multiple voices.

A weekly series featuring local and international talent!

Behind the Scene is more than just live music or original art, it is a way to get to know more about artists and musicians here in San Miguel and beyond.

Lady Zen will be hosting, she will ask each of the artists five questions, to dive deeper into their work and also have a little fun! Musicians will perform their original music, visual artists will present their medium, and dancers will perform an originally choreographed piece.

The intimate setting of Plata will give a chance to meet and get to know these artists and their work in a way that is unique and personal. Each week we will invite different individuals to be a part of the event!

Interested in showing your original work? Email us at sma.plata.73@gmail.com

The practice of meditation gathers, centers, and calms the mind. It allows one to see through the mind’s conditioning and thereby live more fully in the present moment.

The SMA Meditation Community is an open, flowing collection of people from different traditions (including various Buddhist lineages) who share a love of sitting in silence. We also share a love of spiritual community free of doctrine or belief, based in equality and mutual respect. Everyone is welcome. Because friendships with like-minded people support the inner path, we usually meet informally after sittings to share ideas and come to know one another.

Although the forty-minute silent meditations begin at 10:10 and end at 10:50, please feel free to come and go quietly at any time. Meditation assistance is available before or after the sit.

For more in-depth meditation instruction, ask Ann Barden (Vipassana) or Jerry Steward (general) at jermer@hotmail.com, 154-0877.

All offerings are free, donations welcome. For more information or to be on our mailing list, contact: SMAMC@lifepathretreats.com

International Day of Compassion and Kindness is happening
Friday, January 20th!

Sometimes, when our World seems filled with negativity and animosity, we need to take action. Please join us for the International Day of Compassion and Kindness. The mission is to assuage and soften the emotions surrounding the inauguration of Donald Trump, and we invite you to participate on Friday, January 20th.

Imagine hundreds, if not thousands of people around the globe gathered in celebrations of love, understanding, compassion and kindness as an effective way to soften the hatred and fear that has been so prevalent in our lives, our news-feeds, our conversations and our headlines these last several months. Likely this will exacerbate on January 20th; this special day is a way to positively transform that experience.

We would love to have you join us in creating this movement!

Locally in San Miguel, we will be gathering for meditation, kirtan (devotional chanting), storytelling and sufi dancing at 11am for a free event at Los Arcos, 28A Stirling Dickinson (next to la finca). We’re also encouraging others to create gatherings in their communities – whatever they are inspired to do to promote a healing environment of compassion and kindness.

If you are called to create a positive shift in the World, PLEASE TAKE ACTION. We need your support and energy, and invite you to share this email and help spread the word on Facebook and other social media. We ARE able to raise the vibration from fear, anger and sadness to one of love, compassion and kindness.

It takes a village? It takes a World.

In love and light,
Eli + Joseph

Center for Global Justice presents:
Talk: “How the Democrats Elected Donald Trump” by Jeff Faux
Jan. 24, Tuesday 1:00 in Teatro Santa Ana. 60 pesos
***********
BACK TO CLASS
by Cliff DuRand
In his annual lecture for the Center for Global Justice, economist Jeff Faux starts with the question: how did we end up with a President Trump? His provocative answer: the Democrats did it. Today, Party leaders are blaming everyone from Vladimir Putin to James Comey to the Electoral College for their defeat in November. But they should look in the mirror. After Years of neoliberal economic policies that favored Wall Street over their traditional working class base, populist anger finally erupted against them in what had been solid Democratic states. The result is a rightwing government led by the bizarre Trump threatens the very institutions of democracy. The question now becomes: Can the Democrats – and the country – find a way forward?
Faux founded the Economic Policy Institute, the premier research center on economic issues effecting working USians. He has been warning of the political consequences of the growing inequality between labor and capital since the 1980s, and has been a critic of U.S. trade policies beginning with Bill Clinton’s NAFTA. Faux wrote a major book about this, Global Class War. His 2012 book The Servant Economy: Where America’s Elite is Sending the Middle Class turns out to have been prophetic.

The group attendees vary each week and include full time residents, part time residents and visitors, mostly retired and most are from Canada and the US. We are good resource for social networking and getting to know San Miguel and the interesting people who live here. Everyone says the people are friendly.

All are welcome

Film: “Snowden” (Oliver Stone)
January 25 Wednesday 1:00pm in Teatro Santa Ana. 60 pesos

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING
By Cliff DuRand
Filmmaker Oliver Stone has made a dramatic thriller about the most famous and controversial whistle blower of our time: Edward Snowden. What Snowden revealed to the public was the massive surveillance the US government engaged in against its own citizens, as well as foreign leaders. Snowden made us aware of the extent to which the NSA was violating Fourth Amendment protections against “unreasonable search”. There is no longer privacy when Big Brother is watching. The recent Russian hacking of emails pales by comparison.
Is Snowden a patriot or a traitor? Some members of Congress have called for his assassination. Others call him a hero who bravely risked all to uphold the Constitution. What is the responsibility of the individual when faced with his government’s violation of the law or of conscience? This is a question many may be facing now in the days ahead.

Center for Global Justice presents
Talk: “El Presidente Trump: Mexico’s Worst Nightmare” by Laura Carlsen
January 26, Thursday 1:00pm in Teatro Santa Ana. 60 pesos

EL PRESIDENTE TRUMP: MEXICO’S WORST NIGHTMARE
By Cliff DuRand
The Center for Global Justice brings back to San Miguel noted journalist Laura Carlsen to analyze the implications of the Trump presidency for Mexico. Based in Mexico City, her Americas Program is a major source of news and commentary on Mexico and Latin America for English readers (www.cipamericas.org). Her reportage is also often carried by the New York Times, Washington Post, Huffington Post, Christian Science Monitor, BBC and CNN. She is also a favorite speaker here in San Miguel.
Carlsen argues that based on Trump’s campaign rhetoric, Mexico is looking at the prospect of imminent political, social and economic crisis. If he follows through on his promise of massive deportations this will generate an instant unemployment crisis. If he can stem the flow of remittances to families in Mexico, it will have a devastating impact on millions of the country’s poorest families. Then if the US were to pull out of NAFTA, the whole structure of Mexico’s export oriented economy could collapse. The Peña Nieto government, already highly unpopular, doesn’t appear to be up to the task of building the domestic economy or reorienting the country toward the South. And all of this is just starters.
On the up side, Carlsen reports that “Mexican civil society is stepping into the void, rapidly getting together to develop proposals to affirm respect for their rights and dignity, reject policies of hate and restore national sovereignty. A broad res
